Bahrain-Regional, Politics, 8/27/1998
Bahrain's Foreign minister Sheikh Muhammad Bin Mubarak al-Khaleifa has underlined the role played by the Non Aligned Movement NAM in the forthcoming phase, under the current international conditions and developments in the Arab states and international arenas.
In a statement to the "Gulf News" daily issued in Manama on Wednesday, the Bahraini minister noted topics to be debated by the Arab states before the next summit of the non aligned movement which will be held in South Africa. He went on that among the most important issues are the suspension of the Middle easy peace talks as a result of the intransigent policy pursued by the Israeli government. The Bahraini minister added that Arab states will work for winning its support to resume peace talks on the principles of which the Madrid peace conference was initiated.
It provides for Israel's withdrawal from all occupied Arab territories according to UN resolutions 242, 338 and 425 and support for the Palestinian people to establish their own independent state on their native soil with Jerusalem as a capital. The Bahraini minister stressed that NAM has to play a role in formulating the new world order and in making reforms in the UN, foremost being the UN Security Council, as well other issues mostly eliminating mass-annihilation weapons and topics relating to development and the environment.
He called for intensifying the efforts and co-operation of NAM member states to fight terrorism which constitutes a grave threat to world peace and security. He went on terrorism has become an international phenomenon which is not limited to a certain area or people. A matter which necessitates NAM to approve an agreement providing for eliminating it. He hoped that NAM member states will objectively be able to reconsider reasons led to imposing sanctions, according to international resolutions, against certain Arab states.
