Polisario representative in New York backs his peer's resignation

The representative of the Polisario Front in New York has backed the decision of the group's representative in Canada to quit the movement, a Moroccan daily reported on Tuesday.

"As-sahra Al-Maghribya" daily wrote that Ahmed Boukhari expressed his backing to Baba Sayed in a letter to the Polisario's leaders in the Tindouf camps (in southwestern Algeria, stronghold of the Polisario). He also warned that the current disarray in the camps risks pushing other Polisario leaders to quit the front.

The Paris-based "Jeune Afrique" magazine reported recently that Sayyed resigned from his position as Polisario representative in Canada and applied for political asylum in the North American country.

In his resignation letter, Sayyed described the Polisario (an Algerian-backed movement claiming sovereignty over Morocco's southern provinces) as "a business for those who hold power."

Sayyed said in a resignation letter to his former bosses that "the Polisario front is in a state of advanced decomposition," and that its collapse is inevitable, Map reported.

The Polisario had several of its leaders defect from its ranks in the past. These include Brahim Hakim, former foreign minister and ambassador to Algeria of the Sahrawi republic, self-proclaimed by the Polisario, and its former representative in North America, Omar Hadrami.
