Smoking to be religiously prohibited?
Egypt, Religion, 3/25/1998
Nasr Farid Wassel, Egypt's mufti, called for a label reading, "Smoking is religiously prohibited" to be printed on cigarette packages instead of the warning "Smoking is harmful for health."
Egypt's mufti said in the assembly of the suggestions and complaints committee of the Egyptian People's Council that smoking by some men of religion does not imply that smoking is permitted, and that there should be penalties for doing so.
The committee agreed with Dr. Sherif Omar's suggestion to forbid the sale of cigarettes to youths under the age of 18.
