Al-Hayat daily banned from distribution because of Adonis article
Kuwait, Politics, 3/21/1998

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Information banned the London-based al-Hayat daily from distribution because of an article written by poet Adonis in which he highlighted the question of censored books in Kuwait. The paper was permitted into circulation only after the said article was chopped.

Several Kuwaiti parliamentarian attacked Adonis, while Islamists in the Kuwaiti parliament said they considered him more dangerous than Salman Rushdie against the Islamic faith because of the content of several of his books which were displayed at the Arab Book exhibition in Kuwait at the end of 1997.

Because of that incident, the Kuwaiti information minister was questioned, and the Kuwaiti Cabinet later resigned.

Adonis's article concentrated on the evils of censorship.
