Egypt arrests group with plans to blow up Israeli and U.S. embassies
Egypt, Local, 2/27/1998

Egyptian security forces arrested members of a new organization who planned to carry out violent attacks in Cairo, including the blowing up of foreign embassies.

A security official told ArabicNews.com that five members of the organization were arrested and that they belong to the Jihad and the Islamic Group (Gamaa Al Islamia). Also, elements of the Moslem Brotherhood were found to be involved in financing and assisting in the relaying of instructions to the members.

The source said investigations of the organization's members showed intent to blow up certain foreign embassies, including the Israeli and US embassies.

Sources said the security forces' efforts to capture the rest of the organization's members continue. The source added that a group of females from the Moslem Brotherhood carried instructions between the organization's imprisoned leaders and outside members.
