Sudan: Accuses Washington of new efforts to topple it
Sudan, Politics, 2/12/1998
Sudanese Information Minister El-Tayeb Ibrahim Mohammed said his government has received information that the US government plans to impose additional sanctions against Sudan.
These sanctions are part of an aggressive US policy against El-Khartoum started by Washington on March 19, 1990 when European countries and organizations wanted to stop foreign aid to Sudan to economically suffocate the government and topple it, Minister Mohammed said.
Mohammed said that after the failure of that plan, the U.S. resorted to supporting the Sudanese rebel movement, which the government succeeded in containing after government forces won many victories.
This led the American administration to use a new style of confronting Sudan by supplying its neighbors with direct support and arms, which was exposed during US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's last visit to Uganda and Eritrea and her obvious statement of the US governments' intention to topple the current Sudanese government, the minister said.
