Menem, Mubarak inaugurate a nuclear reactor
Egypt, Politics, 1/30/1998
An official Egyptian source said that Argentina's President Carlos Menem will arrive in Cairo on February 4 for a 24-hour official visit to Egypt during which he will inaugurate together with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak a nuclear reactor for research.
The 22-megawatt reactor, which was bought by Egypt from Argentina in May 1997, will operate in the city of Anshas, east of Cairo.
Egypt's Minister of Electricity Maher Abaza said in September 1997 that the reactor will be dedicated to "research, especially in the fields of agriculture, industry and medicine."
Egypt which has joined the NPT, had in 1957 a 2-megawatt reactor also erected in Anshas. Egypt's deputy foreign minister for the Americas Moustafa al-Dweiwani said that during his visit Menem will also discuss with Mubarak bilateral relations and the Middle East peace process.
Prior to his visit to Egypt, Menem will visit Lebanon on February 2.
