Qabbani recovered from sickness, gratitude message to Syrians
Regional, Culture, 12/15/1997
Prominent Syrian poet Nizar Qabbani faxed through the Syrian News Agency a message of thanks and gratitude to the Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and the Syrian people for their great concern during his illness. The message said: "President Assad's care for my health has given me the strength to get better."
He thanked all the ministers and ambassadors delegated by President Assad, and all the relatives and friends who expressed deep feelings of amity and wished him good health. Qabbani, who was admitted to a hospital in London two months ago after a heart attack was the preoccupation of his poetry-lovers across the Arab world.
Nizar Qabbani was born in 1925 in Damascus. He studied law and joined the diplomatic services, working in China, Europe, the US and the Middle East. He has gained widespread popularity in the Arab world through his love poetry which conveys national themes and in which he gives expression to his feelings for women in poems of immediate appeal.
Events and conditions in the Arab world effected his writings and in his later poetry he deals with pressing social, national pan-Arab and political issues, particularly in his collection "In the Margin of the Book of Defeat" (post 1967).
