Algeria forbids demonstrations, even by parliament !
Algeria, Politics, 11/10/1997
Within the struggle between the Algerian Ministry of Interior and the opposition parties over the results of the election recently held in Algeria, the Algerian Ministry of Interior forbade all the gatherings which the opposition parties intended to organize in Wahran, Satif, and Ennaba. Security forces intervened to disperse a rally organized by five members of the National People's Council to protest the results of the election.
In response to the ban on demonstrations, even those organized by members of parliament who enjoy diplomatic immunity, the Coordination Office of the six parties protesting the recent election organized a meeting of the six parties yesterday in which they decided to organize a rally next Thursday. They also decided to submit to President Zeroual through the parliament a complaint against the results of the election.
The six parties protesting the results of the recent election are the Peaceful Society Movement, the Renaissance Movement, the Socialist Powers Front, the Gathering for Culture and Democracy, the Labor Party and Nour Al Din Bu Krouh Party.
