Arresting Islamic students demonstrating at Casablanca University
Morocco, Education, 11/5/1997

A source in the National Students Confederation (NSC) stated that the Moroccan authorities arrested a number of Islamic students demonstrating at the University of Casablanca. The NSC is controlled by the Islamic streams in a number of Moroccan universities, especially in Casablanca and Fez.

In a statement, the NSC requested to keep the freedoms on universities intact. The first confrontation began days ago when students protested against the shortage of means of transportation.

University officials stated that some of the activities practiced by the students on campus have nothing to do with the cultural field, while the students requested that the authorities respect the sacredness of the campus.

The Moroccan authorities had adopted measures last year to prevent political activities on campus which were concurrent with their negotiations with the students to study their requests.

Meanwhile, the Moroccan government of Dr. Abdel Latif Al Filaly set November 19 to look into the files of the Ph.D holders who are unemployed and to study the requests of the university graduates who formed groups to gather in the syndicate centers in rotation after they protested in front of the Ministry of Interior.
