Algerian Hamas Movement accusations of terrorism are baseless
Algeria, Politics, 10/24/1997
The leader of the Algerian Hamas Movement, Sheikh Mahfouz Nehnah, stated that his movement is very keen on preserving Algeria's institutions which requires everybody's help. He added that accusations that security forces are involved in terrorist acts are baseless.
He said that some security forces might be involved or negligent, they might arrive on the scene of violence late on purpose, giving terrorist groups the chance to do what they want. But the government is not responsible for this as these terrorist groups try to make connections with some security officials, it depends of the tendencies of the individuals in the security forces.
Regarding the visit of the Algerian President Zeroual to some of the Arab countries, Nehnah said that Algeria is trying to remove the impression that it is isolated and remote from its Arab and Islamic circles.
Sheikh Nehnah added that France's moves are greatly welcomed by the Algerian public because the terrorist groups are also threatening France. Algeria is trying to determine the kind of relations with France as France is always accused of supporting the Algerian regime against the opposition. He lauded the efforts of President Jaques Chirac as more credible than those of Prime Minister Lionel Jospin.
