American donations to build the new Egyptian Museum
Egypt, Culture, 10/6/1997
In cooperation with the Higher Archeological Council, the Geographical Association will launch donation-collecting campaigns in the USA for funds to be directed toward building the new Egyptian Museum near the pyramids on a 137 feddan area.
The Geographical Association will prepare a documentary film about the pyramids, new archeological discoveries, and the scientific research about the pyramids and the Sphinx in order to promote those sites in the USA and drum up donations for the new museum. The money allocated to implement this campaign is $6 million, which will be spent on shooting the film and taking the snapshots of the archeological sites.
The Egyptian Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni confirmed that the Italian-Egyptian Committee finished its feasibility study for the new museum and the items that will be exhibited in the museum--which is expected to be the biggest in the world. He added that the project will be announced for an international competition among experts and the consulting offices to submit their designs for the museum. The competition is expected to last for a year followed by an international auction to start the construction works.
The Egyptian Minister of Culture added that an executive office was formed to supervise the project, headed by the director of the Cultural Sector, Atef Monsif and a follow-up committee chaired by the minister was also formed.
The new museum is expected to be finished by the year 2004, with a cost of $900 million contributed by the Egyptian government and investment companies in addition to the donations and grants from within Egypt and abroad.
The items exhibited in the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir will be moved to the New Museum in addition to the stored archeological pieces whose number could reach 150 thousand pieces representing all the stages of Egyptian civilization. The New Museum will also include specialized mini museums like the Pharaonic Museum, the Tutankhamen Museum, and the Mummies Museum. It will also include lecture halls, a cinema, and a library.
