Sultanate of Oman as the Switzerland of Arabia
Oman, Culture, 9/4/1997

The Sultanate of Oman is a harmonious bled of modernity tempered with traditional values. The capital Muscat is dominated by some very interesting architecture that combines traditional and modern elements.

Rural Oman is dotted by numerous imposing fortresses and castles, many built during the reign of Sultan Him Saif Al Yaerubi. The Nizwa fort and Jabrein castle, renovated in recent years, are among the most magnificent His tropical landmarks of the country.

In Sur, traditional boats, with which the Arabs dominated maritime trade through the centuries, are still being built at two yards near the city's harbor. From this port, as from other ports along the northeastern coast, tourists set out on pleasure cruises of the magnificent coastline.

Salalah, in the country's South, attracts hordes of tourists, mainly from the Gulf and Arab states, to witness what is commonly referred as the "Dhofar miracle" during the monsoon season.

The monsoon rains transform this southern city into a tropical paradise, Landscaping the mountains and plains with verdant grass and vegetation during this time of year. Nizwa is truly the cultural and arts capital of the Sultanate, a wonderful oasis city with a long history.

Nizwa's Friday market is legendary for its goat auctions, conducted in near-medieval style in a modern setting. Within a short distance of this ancient city are villages and towns of great antiquity.

The Sultanate is known as the "Switzerland of Arabia," alluding to some of its special characteristics as holiday destination. Oman's distinctively oriental flavor, seen in its rich heritage and traditions, is a powerful enticement for travelers to visit this beautiful emerging tourist haven.
