Iran not mediating between Syria and Saudi Arabia
Iran-Regional, Politics, 3/31/2008
Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki in Syria for attending the Arab summit said Sunday that Iran is seeking to strengthen ties among all Arab states especially the relations of Syria and Saudi Arabia.
"No particular mediation effort (between Syria and Saudi Arabia) is being made but we have outlined our stance during separate talks with both sides," Mottaki said.
Tension has been said by some to have risen between Syria and Saudi Arabia in part because of different policies toward Lebanon in relation to the political crisis Lebanon is facing.
He hailed ties between Saudi Arabia and Iran and said during recent years there have been meetings between the two countries' officials at different levels.
The Iranian minister also expressed hope that Saudi Arabia would use its influence in the region to help defuse the political crisis in Lebanon.
Mottaki wrapped up his two-day official visit to the Arab Summit in Damascus Sunday afternoon.
