US worried lest Hizbullah would reconstruct Lebanon
Lebanon-Israel-USA, Politics, 8/18/2006
Lebanese daily As-Safir in its Friday edition reflected the strong worry of the US officials about Hizbullah's serious plans for reconstruction of Lebanon.
The US officials have even asked the Lebanese officials to halt Hizbullah's efforts aimed at reconstruction of their war torn country, according to the Lebanese daily.
As-Safir columnist adds, "Being taken back by Hizbullah's glorious victory the Americans' next worry is lest Hizbullah would emerge as the champion of reconstruction in the eyes of the Lebanese nation, as well!" It says, "The US administration intends to launch a reconstruction plan in Lebanon, merely in a bid to compete with Hizbullah in that respect, so that it would meanwhile mend its distorted image due to its full support for the ruthless Israeli attacks against the Lebanese civilians." Quoting the US daily Los Angeles Times, As-Safir adds, "The Lebanese reconstruction movement Hizbullah's already high popularity would be further multiplied." As-Safir quotes the Head of Middle East Desk of Washington's International Studies Center, John Alterman, as saying, "We are now focusing on assisting the Lebanese in their reconstruction movement, while the majority of the Lebanese nation believe Israel launched its devastation war against their country on behalf of the US administration, and resorting to US weapons." Quoting an American source, As-Safir writes, "The US administration has allocated fifty million dollars to reconstruction of Lebanon," that is naturally merely a very small faction of Lebanon's losses in recent war that amounts to billions of US dollars.
