Top Iraqi leaders ready to ask the US to leave
Iraq-USA, Politics, 7/24/2006
Iraq's prime minister Nouri al-Maliki yesterday in London suggested that foreign troops could leave Iraq within months rather than year, despite the virtual raging civil war, but neither he nor the British premier at a press conference were challenged on this.
Maliki called on the US and Britain Monday to change policies against Israel in order to bring about an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon.
The destruction of the country has reached "unacceptable levels," Maliki said. It is "even not consistent with the rules of law, even if we can say that there is war," he said.
"What I can say about what is happening now is that I can't find enough justification for what is happening here," he said in a translated interview with BBC radio.
The New York Times reported yesterday that "The speaker of the Iraqi Parliament criticized the American government’s involvement in Iraq on Saturday, likening the invasion and its consequences to 'the work of butchers' and demanding that the American authorities disentangle themselves from Iraq’s political affairs."
This comes as several analysts on MSNBC noted that Iraq's major leader Ayatollah Sistani has indicated that the situation in Iraq is very bad, and he may go ahead and call on the US to leave Iraq shortly, and if he does, they noted, that would effectively put an end to the US presence in Iraq.
