Egyptian Council condemn Israeli attack
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 6/29/2006

Egypt is exerting intensive efforts to contain escalation in the occupied territories in the wake of the attacks by Israeli tanks and armors on southern Gaza, reinforced by helicopters and artillery.

President Hosni Mubarak yesterday had a telephone conversation with French President Jacques Chirac on the current developments in Gaza and efforts exerted to ease tension.

President Mubarak last night telephoned Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in a bid to avert tension in Gaza. The President received a telephone, call from Syrian President Bashar AL-Assad.

In the occupied territories, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on the international community to intervene for halting aggression on Gaza.

Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh accused Israel of complicating the crisis of the Israeli abducted soldier.

The Hamas-led Palestinian government described the Israeli offensive against Gaza as genocide against the Palestinian civilians.

Nasr Eddin EL-Shaer, the Deputy Head of the Palestinian government called on the international community, the quartet, Arab leaders and the Arab League as well as the Vatican to take prompt action to halt the aggression.

Aziz Doweik, the Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council said Israel was to blame for this aggression.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas described the offensive as a collective punishment of the Palestinian people. He called on the quartet members to intervene, denouncing the aggression against civilian targets and destruction of infrastructure.

The Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs condemned fresh Israeli aggression on Gaza Strip, terming it a violation of international law and the Palestinian people's human rights.

The Israeli assault is an attempt by the Israeli government to collectively punish the Palestinians for their democratic choice, the council said today.

The statement questioned the content of the message sent to the Palestinians by the Israeli military move in the wake of their agreement to the national dialogue document.

The Israeli practices are at odds with international legitimacy and defy all UN resolutions, according to the statement.
