8.6 million tourists to Egypt in 2005, Garana
Egypt, Economics, 4/18/2006

At the opening of the 5th Annual Conference organized by the Faculty of Tourism and Hotels of Alexandria University, Minister of Tourism Zuheir Garana said that tourist-awareness culture is the backbone of the industry, luring tourists back to Egypt.

He added that the ministry seeks to increase the number of tourists by two million tourists per annum, and that continuous efforts are exerted to promote tourism and upgrade airports, outlets and tourist-geared services in order to yield the highest returns of hard currency.

The conference held under the rubric "The Role of Tourist Awareness in improving Egypt's image on the international tourism map."

The Minister pointed the need for developing a mechanism to ensure prompt service to various bodies and individuals dealing with the ministry, and to facilitate investment procedures.

Garana said that the number of tourists has reached a record 8.6 million in 2005, given the fact that a figure of one million tourists is equal in terms of employment to no less than 200,000 job opportunities.

He further said that the ministry has celebrated a few days ago the launch of a EP20-million long-term national tourist awareness-raising campaign.
