Rice's visit, Syria, and the Lebanese resistance

News reports said that Syria's support for the Lebanese resistance was the core of the talks the US secretary of state Condaleezza Rice held on Friday in Beirut with the Lebanese officials.

However, the Syrian prime minister, preceding results of the visit on Friday told a Lebanese daily that Damascus will not give up support of the resistance so as Lebanon will not be converted into a playground for the Israeli Mosad, and because dismantling the weapons of the Lebanese resistance will be damaging for his country's security," a most important consideration, as quoted by the Lebanese paper, according to al-Jazeera TV.

What is remarkable about the visit by Rice is that Lebanese parliamentarian Saad al-Hariri was the first to meet with Rice upon her arrival before meeting any other Lebanese official. She accompanied him to visit the tomb of his father, the late prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri, where she laid a wreath.

Rice hailed the new Lebanese government and considered it as springs from the core of the free Lebanese will. She told the press on board of the plane before her arrival that Washington inspires to deal with the new Lebanese government and considers the way that the international community will give its support in this regard.

However, one American official described Lahoud as representing "old Lebanon", while the government of Sanyoura represents the "new Lebanon".
