The Iraqi constitution committee work is ongoing

Originally published

The chairman of the parliamentary committee in charge of formulating the constitution, Humam Hammoudi, said that finalizing the writing of the permanent constitution in Iraq will be made in its set time on August 15, noting that work in certain branch committees was completed at a rate of 70 to 80 percent.

Hammoudi pointed differences in view points on certain articles of the constitution especially issues like the confederation, the border of this confederation. There is also a difference over the role of religion, as there is one saying that no law should be enacted violating the principles of the Islamic Sharia, while another view calls for changing it.

According to Hammoudi there is also a difference in the view points over the name of the country "Iraq", noting that there is a real desire to add the word "federal" while others wants to keep the same name or return back to the earlier name "The Iraqi Republic" and not the "Republic of Iraq."

Worthy mentioning that an agreement was reached on Thursday towards the committee of formulating the permanent constitution to increase the number of Arab Sunnis from members to 25 which includes ten of them as consultants in an attempt to end margining the Sunni and getting them involved in the political process.
