Amnesty International extols Morocco human rights achievements
Morocco, Politics, 5/26/2005

Secretary General of the London-based human right organization Amnesty International (AI), Ms. Irene Khan, lauded, in London Wednesday, Morocco's achievements in the field of human rights.

Khan particularly praised the creation of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission (IER) and the adoption of the new Family Code, which she hailed as "progressive."

The beginning of 2004 saw the creation in Morocco of the IER, with the mission of seeking out-of-court settlement of past human rights violations, and the entry into force of the new Family Code which grants the wife equality with the husband in all aspects of the conjugal life.

Abdel Salam Sidahmed, Director of MENA region programs at AI said Morocco has always been referred to as a model in the organization's meetings in several regions, especially the Gulf.

He affirmed the existence of a "fruitful cooperation" between AI and IER, reiterating the international body's disposal to work towards consolidating cooperation with IER.
