Chalabi will not accept pardoning from Jordan
Iraq-Jordan, Politics, 5/14/2005
A spokesman for Ahmad Chalabi said that the Iraqi deputy premier will not accept any pardon from Jordan concerning finding him guilty over the case of smuggling assets of Petra Bank.
Jordanian officials said in Amman on Thursday that Jordan is discussing a request from Iraq to pardon Chalabi but will continue to persist to restore back hundreds of millions of dollars he was convicted of smuggling in a "banking scandal." The spokesman for Chalabi, Intiqad Qanbar, said in a statement "in remarks to stories issued in the press over solving the issue of the Petra Bank that Dr. al-Chalabi will not accept any royal pardoning." He added that Chalabi refused a similar pardoning proposed by King Hussein in March 1998.
Qanbar continued that Chalabi stressed the need that the Jordanian authorities have to compensate the stakeholders at Petra Bank and its clients over the damages inflected on them by the committee of emergencies which assumed the administration of the bank and eliminated documents for its assets. Jordanian investigators estimate the missing assets of the bank at 300 million dollars.
