Michael Aoun announces intention to return to Lebanon
Lebanon, Politics, 4/11/2005

The leader of the Christian opposition against Syria, Mucheal Aoun, announced his intention to return back to Lebanon on May 7th after he had spent 14 years in exile in France, at a time when the designated Lebanese prime minister Omar Karami announced he would form the government today, Monday.

Allen Aoun, the coordinator of the "return back" committee in the free national trend ( Aoun trend), said "Gen. Aoun decided initially to return back to Lebanon on May 7 but he will personally announce the date of his return later." Allen Aoun said that Michael Aoun always said that he will return back after the Syrian withdrawal, and before the elections in order to take part in the political life."

Worth noting that Aoun was taken out of the Presidential palace in Baabda in 1990 following a Syrian- Lebanese attack against him. He is wanted to be brought before a Lebanese court under the charge of violating the relations between Syria and Lebanon and provoking "sectarian unrest," after he had supported an American law on sanctions against Syria.

For his part, Karami said that the first action in the next government is to withdraw a draft project submitted by his resigned government to make the elections on the ground of the minor circle ( the district), as demanded by the Christian opposition especially the Maronite Patriarch Nasrullah Sfeir, and to return back to the elections law based on governorates and proportional representation.
