Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 3/28/2005

While Lebanon is preparing today, Monday, to celebrate the 40th day after the death of the late Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri, amid tense security atmospheres, the Syrian forces continued on Sunday their withdrawal from the Lebanese territories.

Security sources said that the Syrian forces evacuated on Sunday a position in the Bekaa plain in a step considered by observers as an introduction for the second phase of withdrawal whose mechanism will be set at the level of a Syrian- Lebanese joint committee next week.

The sources said that the Syrian forces evacuated two positions in Chtoura and Barr Elias to the east of Beirut. Two trucks were seen carrying soldiers crossing the borders into the Syrian territories, while one position for the Syrian intelligence in Chtoura was seen emptied only from pictures of President Bashar al-Assad.

This withdrawal was followed by another withdrawal from Majdaloun position in the Bekaa where the Syrian forces withdrew its equipments to the Syrian city of Homs, so as number of Syrian troops withdrew during ten days reached 10,000.
