King of Jordan exempts his brother from the post of the viceroy
Jordan, Politics, 11/29/2004

In a sudden step, the Jordanian King Abdullah II Bin al-Hussein exempted his ( half brother ) Hamzeh Bin al-Hussein from the post of the viceroy ( the King's deputy).

In a message he addressed to his brother and broadcast by the Jordanian TV on Sunday evening that he had decided to exempt his brother from his responsibility as a crown prince "for giving him more time allowing him the freedom of movement." He explained " I was sure that your presence in this honorary post restricts your movement and the possibility of assigning you with certain mission and stands because of its symbolic nature between you and shouldering certain responsibilities you are capable of carrying, accurately." King Abdullah gave his message with no further explanations over his decision but he indicated that the post of the crown prince will be suspended for the time being.

King Abdullah II had nominated his brother Hamzeh Bin al-Hussein ( 24 year old) as a crown prince five years ago following the death of their late father al-Hussein Bin Talal who had cancer on February 7th, 1999.

However, the correspondent of al-Jazeera TV in Amman said that the decision was surprising and that according to the Jordanian constitution which was amended in 1964, the King has the authority to assign the post of the crown prince to his elder son or to one of his male brothers.

The correspondent explained that Hamzeh had no political activity since he had assumed the post of the crown prince except his presidency of al-Beit foundation as he has continued during the past period of time his study at Saint Herst military royal academy in Britain and he continues his study and that his last open appearance was in his wedding part in May in Amman.

Worthy mentioning that prince Hamzeh is the son of the late Jordanian King al-Hussein from his fourth American wife, of Arab origin Nour al-Hussein ( Liza Halabi).
