Zarqawi declares commitment to Bin Laden, notifies on the situation in Iraq
Iraq, Politics, 10/18/2004

Al-Tawhid Wal Jihad group which is led by Musab al-Zarqawi announced loyalty to the leader of al-Qaida organization Osama Bin Laden, noting that it is contacting him regarding the current operations in Iraq.

A statement attributed to the group and published on a website on the Internet said " we declare that al-Tawhid Wal Jihad group, prince and soldiers, are loyal to the Sheikh of the Mujahideen Osama Bin laden."

The statement said that contacts were continuous between " Sheikh Abu Musab with brothers in al-Qaida since 8 months during which views were exchanged. The exchange of ideas was suspended for a short time and then resumed once again." He added that al-Qaida welcomed the strategy of the group in Iraq.

The statement which was dated October 17 carried the signature of Abu Meisara al-Iraqi whose information concerning the group are considered confidential.

Despite news rumored on the relation between al-Tawhid Wal Jihad group to al-Qaida organization, this is, however, the first time in which an official declaration is made on "loyalty" of al-Zarqawi group for Bin Laden.

Washington accuses al-Zarqawi of carrying out several attacks against its forces in Iraq. The US had allotted a sum of $ 25 million as a reward for information leading to the arrest or death of al-Zarqawi.
