Khartoum agrees on deployment of new forces in Darfur
Sudan, Politics, 10/2/2004

Khartoum agreed with the African Union which sponsors the peace talks between the rebels in Darfur, west Sudan and the central government to deploy 3500 soldiers and 800 policemen that belong to the union in the district.

Sudan's ambassador to Ethiopia, Othman al-Sayed, announced in statements quoted yesterday that the agreement with the African Union was signed on Friday in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa by the Sudanese deputy foreign minister al-Teijani Saleh Fadeil and the commissioner of the African Union for peace and security affairs Saeed Jneid.

Al-Sayed indicated that another meeting will be held in the mid of October to define the mission of this new African force which will arrive consequently whenever financing is provided.

In New York, the Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael described what is taking place in Darfur as a "tribal war." He indicated in a speech before the foreign relations council at the UN that racial fighting which took place was part of a tribal war among the people of Darfur.

On increasing the number of the African forces, Ismael explained that his country does not oppose increasing its number to reach 5,000 troops. He said "we have agreed on changing the mission." He continued that their mission will be expanded in the area of investigation and monitoring the Sudanese police to make sure they are not supporting the Jangawid tribes.
