Washington: Darfur peace is linked to peace in the south
Sudan-USA, Politics, 9/24/2004
The American envoy to Sudan stressed that the political solution for the Darfur district crisis lies in Nivasha peace agreement with the southern rebels so as to end the central authority.
But he warned that Sudan should not loose its concentration on the South peace agreement because of the concentrated attention on Darfur. He warned that Greater Sudan might be endangered, recalling the Somali crisis where control of the central authority was lost. The American envoy Charles Snider, who was talking on Thursday following a meeting with Sudanese officials, held Darfur rebels the responsibility of obstructing the peace talks with the Sudanese government in Nigeria's capital, Abuja.
He said that the announcement made by the USA on genocide in Darfur was understood by the rebels as a green light for unreasonable demands. Snider called on the rebels movement not to exaggerate demands.
The separate Abuja talks on Darfur crisis collapsed last week, but will be resumed in October, Snider said it should deal with ceasing fire and increasing aid to the displaced Sudanese.
On the other hand, the Sudanese ministry of the interior said in a statement yesterday that the rebels attacked a village in West Kardavan last week and killed 8 civilians.
Meantime, the special representative for the UN secretary general Van Brunk said on Thursday that the African Union and the UN are currently studying a plan to deploy some 5,000 military observers in Darfur area.
In a press conference he had held in Khartoum, he indicated he will concentrate in his report to be submitted on September 30 to the UN Security Council on the need to enhance the mission of the African Union observers.
