3,000 Sudanese homeless since the beginning of the month
Sudan, Politics, 9/7/2004

A UN report issued on Sunday said that the continued violence in that Darfur resulted since the end of August to displacing more than 3,000 persons. The report said that the villages which are situated to the south of Zamzam city near al-Fasher, the capital of northern Darfur was exposed to attacks on August 31, but the side responsible for that has not been identified yet.

This report comes after a similar report by the UN issued last week, explained that Khartoum carried out certain international demands but failed in halting the attacks of the Jangaweid militias.

The UN did not impose sanctions on Sudan but called for giving more authorization to the African Union observers in order to put an end to the violations. A matter which pushed the US to criticize the UN under the pretext that it is being easy on Sudan, while the European Union renewed talking about sanctions.

These developments came four days after the UN secretary general envoy to Darfur, Yan Brunk, admitted before the UN Security Council that the security situation is improving there. A matter which was viewed by observers as removing the sword of sanctions put on the government of Khartoum.
