Iraq, Politics, 9/6/2004

The office of the Iraqi Interim prime minister Eyad Allawi said that one persons was detained in northern Baghdad and tests are being made on his DNA to make sure whether he is the former Iraqi Vice President Ezzat Ibrahim al-Douri or not.

For its part the US defense department ( Pentagon) refused to deny or confirm al-Douri detention news. The spokesman for the US defense department Glen Flood said that recent information "I have received" indicate that he might not be ( al-Douri), but he added he could not deny nor confirm the detention news.

The Iraqi ministry of defense had earlier announced news of detaining al-Douri and the same did the Iraqi ministry of the Interior. The minister of state in the Iraqi interim government Qasem Dawoud said that the trial of Saddam Hussein and Ezzat Ibrahim al-Douri will start before the legislative elections due in January 2005.

But the commander of the national guards in the central area in Iraq Maj. Gen. Ahmad Khalaf Salman surprised all by saying that his forces did not take part in any operation nor arrested al-Douri and have no information on this matter." Several hours earlier, the commander of the national guards in Tikrit col. Abdullah al-Jabbouri announced the detention of al-Douri.

For his part, doctor Nashwan Muhammad Saber who works in Tikrit general hospital said that Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri " has never come to the hospital." Meantime, the American army said in a statement that two American soldiers were killed and other 16 injured on Sunday evening in a mortar attack outside Balad city to the north of Baghdad, while a booby trapped car went off in a street in the downtown of Baghdad but no casualties were reported.

In a latest development, one American soldier and 6 Iraqi civilians were injured slightly in a booby trapped car explosion when one American vehicle was running near a base for the American army in al-Dakhil, 60 Km to the north of Baghdad. One American military spokesman said that three Iraqis in a building near the incident were detained and taken for investigations.
