Turkman of Karkouk demonstrate against the control of the Kurds
Iraq, Politics, 8/23/2004

Hundreds of Turks demonstrated in the streets of Karkouk yesterday in protest of the attempt by the Kurds to "control" the city and seizing their lands.

One of the organizers of the demonstration, Rasoul Zein al-Abidin, said that the "aim of the demonstration is to let the voice of the Tukmans be heard by the Iraqi government and the world.. and to warn against unstopped attempts made by the Kurds to control the city." He added " we are demonstrating today in a peaceful way but we might resort to force tomorrow to expel them from our lands."

One of the demonstrator said: " we deplore the violations taking place in the name of the Kurdish oppressors." He added " Iraq is not another Palestine so as our lands to be usurped." The demonstration which was called on by the Turks in Karkouk governorate was attended by several parties like the "higher council for the Islamic revolution," and the Turkman Front which includes four Turkman parties as well as several chieftains and men of religions in the governorate.

The demonstrators accused some Kurdish parties of paying sums ranging between 2000 to 3500 dollars to each Kurdish family returning back to Karkouk from the governorates of Suleimaneyah, Irbil and Dhouk. They said that these parties, in collaboration and coordination of the commander of Karkouk police and the director of Karkouk municipality council distributed land pieces to every family encouraging them for building.
