Arab FMs rebuff sanctions or military intervention in Darfur
Regional-Sudan, Politics, 8/10/2004
The Arab League on Sunday said it opposed sanction against Sudan or any threat of military intervention in western Darfur region.
The Cairo based Arab- League on Sunday held an emergency meeting of Arab Foreign Ministers on Darfur to reject in a statement hints of any forced military intervention in the area.
It said sanctions would only result in negative effects for the whole Sudanese people and complicate the crisis in Darfur.
The decision called upon the UN Security Council to give the adequate and suitable time for the Sudanese government as to be capable of implementing pledges and commitments for the UN regarding Janjaweed militia disarmament.
The AL called to extend needed aid to Darfur as to allow the displaced and refugees to return -- away from any pressures or bids to impose sanctions.
