Sanctions are expected to be imposed on Sudan next week
Sudan, Politics, 7/15/2004
Diplomats at the UN said that members at the UN Security Council resumed on Wednesday their talks over the American project which states to impose sanctions on Sudan because the government of Khartoum did not take deterrent decisions against its pro- armed militias and the diplomats ruled out the issuance of a decision before the beginning of next week.
The diplomats added that the expected decision imposes immediate banning on the travel and armament of the Jangaweid militias and threatens to extend the sanctions to Khartoum within one month if the government will not stop the killing of civilians and the crimes of rape and expelling Sudanese of African origins from their villages.
Britain and Germany say that these sanctions are very small and very late and that the world has to impose a direct banning on the weapons in Sudan if the government will not abide by its obligations.
For his part, the American ambassador at the UN John Danforth said that a meeting will be held in Khartoum between the UN and the American government and the Sudanese government in order to study latest development of Darfur file.
