Rumsfeld in Abu Ghreib prison: Arab media publishes lies
Iraq-USA, Politics, 5/14/2004
The US defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld who arrived in Iraq yesterday in a sudden visit during which he inspected Abu Ghrieb prison, told reporters who traveled with him from Washington to Baghdad " we are careful that the detainees are treated properly and our soldiers to have a good conduct."
He said he will be happy to publish new pictures on the abuse operations in Iraq so as to "close this file." But he added " at the meantime, I do not know about the intention of the administration to publish them," noting that this will be considered a violation to the Geneva agreement over prisoners.
Rumsfeld accused the Arab mass media of publishing " lies" on the practices of the American forces in Iraq. He added "They lied concerning us along the past 12 months, in the Arab papers and through al-Jazeera and al-Arabia TV stations." He stressed that " all silly news we read on hiding the facts or that the Pentagon hides information are wrong and not precise."
Meantime, the spokeswoman for the ICRC (Red Cross) Antonilla Noutari said that the ICRC notified Rumsfeld that publishing new pictures on abusing the detainees will be considered a violation to Geneva agreement. She said " the dignity of the detainees should be honored all the time." However, the British government announced that the pictures published by the " Daily Mirror," showing British soldiers abusing one Iraqi detainees " were not pictured" in Iraq, noting that they are still the subject of investigations.
On the other hand, the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak described the operation of abusing the Iraqi prisoners in Iraq as a " brutal and disgusting act."
