Four killed, scores wounded in Riyadh explosions
Saudi Arabia, Local, 4/22/2004

Saudi Arabia's minister of the interior Prince Nayef Bin Abdul Aziz threatened to chase what he called terrorist cells which carried out the suicide attack which targeted the Saudi general security headquarters in Riyadh's downtown.

As he was inspecting the wounded of the attack which targeted the security forces, the Saudi minister described the attack as a bankruptcy by the " terrorist cells." He indicated that the security forces in recent days foiled several attacks that were not declared and continue to chase these cells.

News were contradictory over the number of the victims of the attack. As the official Saudi TV announced that the bombardment resulted in killing 4 persons and wounded other 148, sources in the Saudi police said that 8 were killed including one senior security officer and wounding of other 114.

Saudi security sources explained that the explosion resulted from a two booby trapped cars which were close to the building of the general security headquarters which is composed of seven storey in al-Washm street in Riyadh.

Witnesses said that the driver of one of the two booby trapped car tried to enter the building and was prevented at the guard gate and then he returned back one hour before the end of the official working day and the result was the destruction of the eastern faŤade of the building and a warehouse. Saudi journalist and writer Abdul Rahman al-Lahem said that the explosion is a change in the strategy of what he called extremist groups. He expected such an act to be a reaction to the security forces which has been able to recently arrest many of them.

The Islamic advocate Suleiman al-Dweish said that the explosion is a "grave change in such extremist attacks." As after it used to target the Americans have become targeting the Saudi security forces.
