Europe, the Vatican, France condem Rantissi assassination
Palestine-European Union, Politics, 4/19/2004
France condemned Israel's assassination Saturday of Aziz Al Rantissi, the leader of the Islamic Resistance Hamas in Gaza.
Spokesperson for the French Foreign Ministry Herve Ladsous said France anew affirms that assassinations violate international law and are considered unacceptable.
He added that each country in the region was entitled to offer protection for their citizens but not at the expense of the law.
Ladsous said peace would never be realized through the use of violence but rather through consultations.
Pope John Paul II expressed deep regret and condemned on Sunday Israel's assassination of Hamas leader in Gaza Abdel Aziz Al Rantissi.
The Pope reiterated his denunciation of acts which promulgate violence and hamper peace in the Palestinian territories.
The European Union on Sunday condemned Israel's assassination of Hamas leader Abdel Aziz Mohammed Al Rantissi as "unlawful," with senior officials warning the killing would trigger more violence and extremism in the region, reports said.
"The EU position is clear; extra-judicial killings are contrary to international law. They are unjustified," Irish Foreign Minister and current EU spokesman Brian Cowen told reporters.
