Sudan, Politics, 3/31/2004

A Sudanese official source announced that ten Sudanese army officers were detained under the charge of being involved in a military coupe attempt, seemed to be linked to the current conflict in Darfour.

The source which asked to be anonymous refused to give more explanations or to disclose the identity of the detained officers.

Chairman of the opposition People's Congress party, Hassan al-Turabi, said on Monday that the Sudanese authorities arrested 6 party officials over the implications of conditions in Darfour. Al-Turabi added that among the detainees are three members of the political party: Bashir Adam Rahmeh, Adam al-Taher and Hassan Satti.

Al-Turabi stressed that the security forces also summoned other officials in the party including his deputy, Abdullah Hassan Ahmad, who was released after investigation.

However, it is expected that negotiations will start today in Chad between representatives of the Sudanese government and Darfour rebels in an attempt to restore back calmness to this area. Since one year, acts of riots in the area resulted in killing about 3,000 persons, displacing of 670,000 persons in Sudan while other 135,000 were evacuated to Chad.
