Khartoum: news on a coupe attempt
Sudan, Politics, 3/30/2004
The Sudanese Islamic opposition figure Hassan al-Turabi yesterday announced that the Sudanese authorities detained several officials from the People's National Congress party which he presides over.
A Sudanese official source told reporters that the authorities detained last Sunday 10 remarkable military figures supporters for the national congress, nine of them are from Darfour region, on charge of preparing for a coupe. The source added that the detention operation was made in a military base in Khartoum where the " leaders of the coupe " were meeting, noting that five of the conspirators are from the air force.
Al-Turabi said that six officials from the Congress party, including three members of the political bureau: Bashir Adham Rahmeh, Adam al-Taher Hamdan and Hassan Saati were detained on Sunday. He added the security forces summoned also other officials in the party including the assistant secretary general Abdullah Hassan Ahmad and then freed them after interrogation.
Al-Turabi considered in a press statement that the number of detainees reached 27 and that these acts of detentions are linked to the situation in Darfour district in west Sudan, especially as government officials accused repeatedly the national congress of supporting the rebel movement in the district, a matter which was denied by the Party.
But the People's National Congress party said later in a statement that the security forces summoned on Sunday the assistant of the secretary general of the party, Abdullah Hassan Ahmad, and notified him of the military coupe attempt and of detaining several army officers and civilians over their involvement in this attempt. The statement explained that the security officials explained that the investigations proved that the people's congress rakes part in this attempt which it described as an "arrangement of racial factors."
