Sudan, Politics, 3/6/2004
The southern rebels of Sudan announced that violent confrontations took place on Tuesday between them and the fighters of Uganda's al-Rabb resistance fighters army in southern Sudan.
The representative of the Sudan People's Liberation Army in Uganda, George Reck, said that the fighting erupted between the two sides when the rebels of al-Rabb army were trying to transport stolen objects to Uganda when they clashed with the front lines of the people's army.
He explained that two fighters of the southern rebels were killed in the battle which took place between Mague and Turil, southern Sudan. But he added that his forces were able at a later time to launch a new attack against the fighters of the al-Rabb army for resistance and captured many of them.
Al-Rabb army for resistance has been active since 1988 in northern Uganda with the aim of toppling the government of Yuri Mosevini and replace it instead with a regime based on the ten commandments. It had launched several bloody attacks against civilians and its victims are estimated at 100,000 at least and kidnapping more than 20,000 children and the evacuation of 1.2 million persons.
On the other hand, the spokesman for the Sudanese army, lt. Gen Muhammad Bashir Suleiman, said that there is an agreement that provides for permitting the Ugandan army to chase members of al-Rabb army movement in the Sudanese lands for three months.
The spokesman told journalists that the Sudanese defense minister, Bakri Hassan Saleh, signed with his Ugandan counterpart, currently visiting Khartoum, and that this agreement is valid until May 31st.
