Cabinet approves draft laws on family court, nationality
Egypt, Politics, 2/17/2004
The Egyptian Cabinet approved today a final draft for the law on family court in preparation to referring it to President Hosni Mubarak and then to the Shura Council and People's Assembly.
In statements after the meeting, Minister of Information Safwat Al-Sherif said that the draft law, which comes in response to an initiative by the National Democratic Party (NDP), regulates litigation on personal status affairs to bring in one package all matters related to the family to expedite procedures and ease off burdens.
He said that a non-profit fund will be set up to enforce rulings on nafaqa (alimony), which will be affiliated to the Nasser Social Bank, adding that the fund will be financed by donations and allocations from the Finance Ministry.
The Cabinet also approved a draft on amendments introduced to law 26/1975 on nationality to constitutionally equalize the rights and duties of Egyptian mothers, he said.
Al-Sherif, who doubles as NDP Secretary General noted that the proposed amendment would grant nationality to a person born to an Egyptian mother if he/she expressed a wish to the Interior Minister to acquire the Egyptian nationality with the elapse of one year after application without the issuance of an Interior Minister's decision otherwise.
