Maher: No decision yet on ties with Iran
Egypt-Iran, Politics, 1/7/2004
Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher said yesterday that contacts between Egypt and Iran were most definitely continuing since President Hosni Mubarak met with Iranian President Mohammad Khatami in Geneva.
As for what has been said about a full resumption of diplomatic relations between both countries, Minister Maher said this would only become clear when Cairo and Tehran issue a joint communique in this regard.
Maher added that this is the norm in relations between states and that such a resumption of relations between Egypt and Iran was to be expected given their importance in the region.
As for intentions of holding an Egyptian-Iranian summit between Mubarak and Khatami, Maher said that there were no plans for the time being.
But Maher said that he was happy that the street named after Sadat's killer had been changed finally in Iran.
Earlier in the day, Tehran City Council decided to rename a street, which was named after Sadat's assassin.
Iran and Egypt have expressed a desire in recent weeks to patch up their differences.
