Al Ittihad Al Ichtiraki: Peru backs Morocco in Sahara conflict
Morocco-Peru, Politics, 1/6/2004
Director of the Peruvian agency of international cooperation, Juan Granda Vera, has said his country backs Morocco's in the Sahara issue.
Peru "totally backs Morocco's stance because we think the Sahrawi provinces are part and parcel of the Moroccan territory," Granda asserted in an interview published Saturday by Moroccan "Al Ittihad Al Ichtiraki" daily.
"This reality is confirmed by international law," he insisted. The Sahara is a former Spanish colony retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under an agreement with Madrid and Nouakchott. Since then, the Algeria-backed Polisario separatist group is claiming the independence of these Moroccan southern provinces.
Juan Granada, who participated in the meeting of the Group 77 plus China held last month in Marrakech, noted that Peru was the first Latin American country to adopt such a crystal clear position in this issue.
"For us, this standpoint is a political commitment toward a friend country, Morocco," he said, stressing that bilateral relations have never reached "such an excellent level" since the establishment of diplomatic relations 17 years ago.
