The US should not be supported at the UN
Iraq, Analysis, 9/6/2003

The US had made a complete mockery of the UN when it decided to attack Iraq without the consent of the United Nations. The US said that it will do what it wants regardless of the the UN decisions. Now, the UN, which seems to have no self respect, is talking about possible compromise.

The US is guided by a new doctrine developed by the Bush administration of "preemptive strike." If the US feels a need to, it gives itself the right to attack anyone, anytime, and anywhere for any pretext it chooses to make up, as it has in Iraq. The US has set itself up as judge, jury and executioner in world affairs.

The US lied to the world about Iraq, and there is no reason it will not do the same again and again when it suits its interests. The fact that the US public seems to cares less for international democratic values, matters little to the discussion about the UN support for the US. The US public gave strong support to its government in going outside international law, and has gladly allowed to be lied to, and cares less as long as it is not a domestic issue.

But for the international community to support the US now in its quest to seek legitimacy and support from the UN would make no sense what-so-ever. It would only encourage and legitimize the US policy of preemptive action. The US acts military, and then wants the world to clean up after it. It is time the US lived up to idle chatter and did what it claims it wants to do. The US record is littered with failed promises. Claims are made about intentions to be later retracted when the US achieves it true and unstated objectives. From Haiti to Afghanistan, the US has little to show for, years later.

The US now claims it is serious. It wants money for Iraq. The US does not want to pay for it. Or more appropriately, it wants the billions from the Congress to be for military expenditures. 60 billion dollars or what ever the figure maybe. The US is trigger happy to find money for weapons, and not the same amount or much more for civil reconstruction. The is the logic of US international politics. Weapons first and foremost, and bread crumbs later. The bottom line seems to be always the same.

We have a messed up international conflict resolution system, corrupted by US international values, and now, once again, the international community is being cooped to participate in this act. Why? in the name of compromise. Comprise of obscene policies. It is as if the world is blind or helpless. They can see no other solutions to this and the other persistent international conflicts. Maybe, just maybe, it may occur to someone that enough is enough of banging our heads against the wall.

Compromise is not always a good word, sometimes it is a compromise in complicity and harm. There may be a door to problems other than what the US is showing; we just have to look. Enough of the US policy of preemptive doctrines and the like. Now the US is trying to drag Europe and the rest of the world into the same mentality and way of acting internationally on this and a host of other issues. We have seen how mighty the US when it comes to destruction, let us see if the US is good for anything else. The US got this world into this mess, and is leading it into a much bigger mess. If you cannot oppose such policies, then at the very least, do not help such policies. The US can do what it wants. That's fine. Let her do it on its own.
