Regional, Health, 7/3/2003

Among the 42 million persons suffering from AIDS in the world, 500,000 are in the Arab states, the United Nations Development Program said in a report.

During an encounter held in Cairo on the scourge, UNDP regional representative in Egypt, Samir Anouti, said the biggest number of persons suffering from AIDS is recorded in Sudan with 400,000 cases.

Anouti further underlined that 95 percent of Aids-affected people, including 2,000 children, are from developing countries, noting that each day, 14,000 new cases are reported in the world and that 9,000 persons die every day because of the disease.

According to Anouti, 5 million new cases and 3,100,000 deaths were registered in 2002.
