Saudi - Iranian cooperation; al-Faisal: Israel obstructs road to peace
Saudi Arabia-Iran, Politics, 6/16/2003

Saudi Arabia and Iran stressed their continued cooperation and the need of cooperation between all countries of the region to fight terrorism and extremism, according to the Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharazi during his meeting with his Saudi counterpart Prince Saud al-Faisal in Tehran by the end of the week.

Kharazi added that cooperation between Tehran and Riyadh is standing because "terrorism threatens all of us." No information was leaked on the file of detainees of al- Qaida organizations at the Iranian authorities on which it was said that al-Faisal went to Iran to verify if there are Saudis among these detainees.

However, the Saudi foreign ministers sent messages to Israel and the USA in which he denounced Israel because of "its aggressive acts" against the Palestinians and its "obstructing of the roadmap." In a statement to al-Arabia TV. al-Faisal said that Saudi Arabia and Iran are neighbors to Iraq and that our "political interest is Iraq's unity, independence, and sovereignty on its territories and therefore we are careful to maintain Iraq's security and stability until it maintains independence and sovereignty." He stressed that cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Iran in the area of terrorism fighting is standing..

This was stressed by the Saudi minister after his meeting with the Iranian President Muhammad Khatami who received a message from the Saudi Crown Prince. Al-Faisal also met with the former Iranian President Ali Akbar Hashami Rafsanjani.

Kharazi, on the other hand, stressed the need of maintaining coordination among countries neighboring Iraq, adding that "the US and Britain have to give these countries some importance." On the Palestinian- Israeli conflict, Kharazi considered that the key for the success or failure of the roadmap is Israel, stressing that talking about peace in the current conditions is very difficult, "with the existence of the Israeli terrorism and the massacres committed by the Israelis."
