Assahraa Al Maghribia: Argentina does not recognize Polisario, denounces situation in Tindouf camps
Morocco-Argentina, Politics, 1/22/2003
Argentinean ambassador in Morocco, Edgardo Piuzzi, said that his country "does not recognize Polisario and has always denounced the situation in Tindouf camps," in South Eastern Algeria.
In an interview published on Tuesday by Moroccan daily in Arabic "Assahraa Al Maghribia," the Argentinean diplomat termed as "shameful" the detention of Moroccan prisoners in Tindouf camps, for more than twenty five years, adding that Argentina has always upheld a clear stance: "The Sahara is indubitably Moroccan."
Many South American countries have followed suit and started to withdraw their recognition of the Polisario separatist movement, he further said.
Touching on bilateral relations, Piuzzi expressed hope to see trade exchanges beefed up, based on the cooperation accords signed by the two countries in industrial and equipment realms, foreseeing a 50% rise in commercial transaction between the two countries.
He further said that Casablanca-Buenos Aires air route is likely to energize tourism and business travels to Morocco, and allow some 500,000 Argentinean to go to Morocco, Europe or the Middle East via Casablanca.
The Argentinean diplomat added that his country welcomes Morocco's request to adhere to the South American market "Mercosur" that includes Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay. Morocco's privileged geographic situation will allow Mercosur member states to market their products in African and Eastern Europe, he noted.
He expressed hope that King Mohammed VI will visit Argentina. "The best present that Morocco can give Argentina is His Majesty's visit to our country." He said.
