Russian deputy FM arrives in Baghdad
Iraq-Russia, Politics, 1/17/2003

The Russian deputy foreign minister Alexander Sultanov arrived in Baghdad in an attempt to find out a diplomatic solution and avoiding a war that might be launched by the USA.

The Russian official denied to have had a message from the Russian President Vladimir Putin to his Iraqi counterpart Saddam Hussein. He said that this visit falls in the course of consultations during which view points will be exchanged concerning the situation in Iraq and the region.

On Wednesday evening, Sultanov met with the Iraqi foreign minister Naji Sabri immediately upon his arrival in Baghdad to hold discussions. The Iraqi news agency said that the Russian official said that his visit aims at discussing the current conditions and the American threats against Iraq. He stressed that any war against Iraq will be damaging for the interests of the international community as a whole.
