Arab Ministerial committee on Somalia

The Arab Ministerial committees concerning Somalia stemmed from the Arab League, the UN, the African federation and IGAD met to draw an urgent program in order to restore back security and stability to Somalia through confiscating the weapons of the militias and remerging these militias in the state's establishments.

The committee whose meeting was chaired on Monday evening by the Secretary general of the Arab League Amr Moussa and attended by the representatives of the Arab states, stressed in a statement issued in conclusion of the meeting the need to maintain the unity of the Somali territories. The statement urged the warring Somali sides to reach a peaceful settlement to the crisis and to rebuild the country.

The committee expressed its thanks for the Arab states which gave financial support for Somalia and urged other countries to meet their obligations, according to the resolutions of the recent Beirut Arab summit.

In this context, the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Maher said that its was agreed that the Arab League will contact once again with the Somali sides within the context of IGAD conference or at the bilateral level and to have coordination among various organizations working in this field.

On Monday evening, the Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir met with the foreign ministers and heads of the Arab states delegations taking part in the meetings of the Arab ministerial committee. He commended the efforts made by the Arab League in order to achieve peace in Sudan and to support rebuilding of southern Sudan.

The Sudanese President expressed his thanks for the leaders of the Arab states who responded to the call advocated by the Arab league to rebuild Sudan and areas affected by war in order to preserve Sudan's unity, people and territories.
