France willing to cooperate with Egypt in gas exports
Egypt-France, Economics, 1/11/2003
Minister of Petroleum Sameh Fahmy said yesterday that France expressed willingness to cooperate with Egypt in exporting natural gas to the European continent and increasing the French investments in prospecting for oil and gas and their relevant industrial projects.
"President Hosni Mubarak's weight on the international arena and distinguished personal relations with French President Jacques Chirac will greatly contribute to materialize Egypt's plan to export natural gas to the European Union (EU) countries," said Fahmi who is currently on a visit to Paris.
"Senior officials in Gas France and the giant Total petroleum company said that political decisions and friendly understanding between the two readerships in Egypt and France will play a key role to augment cooperation in the field of oil protection, extraction and export to France and other European countries," said Fahmi.
He added that the decision to import gas or petroleum as strategic commodities is not taken at the level of companies but rather governments.
Fahmi described his current visit to France as fruitful as it will set the stage for Total's return to Egypt after many years' hiatus.
Gas France, considered one of the biggest companies in Europe, is seeking expansion in other European countries and work in the gas protection.
