Bassam Abu Sharif founds 'Palestine's democratic party'
Palestine-Jordan, Politics, 8/5/2002

Former media advisor for the chairman of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat, Bassam Abu Sharif, announced in Amman, Jordan, the foundation of "Hizb Philastine al-Democrati " ( Palestine Democratic Party). It aims at establishing a Palestinian state on the occupied territories of 1967 including East Jerusalem, which will be the capital.

Abu Sharif said that his party will work to consolidate democratic principles and perform reforms in the Palestinian authority as well as fight corruption. He said that the "crimes committed by Israel require uniting the factions, resisting the occupation, and practicing our right in defending ourselves." In a statement, Abu Sharif said that his party will compete through an election program for setting the foundations for the Palestinian state "for which we fought and sacrificed ourselves for its foundation, over purely democratic principles."

He added "numerous mistakes were committed in the past. There were no transparency. It happened many times that the right man was not in the right position." Abu Sharif said that his party will be "a constructive opposition party for Arafat's authority."
